The Primary Schools Credit Union Tennis Tournament
The sun may have been hot, but the tennis was scorching at Rostrevor tennis club in Kilbroney Park when six schools from the Warrenpoint and Burren area took to the courts for the annual Primary Schools Credit Union Tennis Tournament. The primary schools competing this year were, Carrick, Contafleece, St Bronaghs, Killowen, St Dallans and Kilbroney. Each team consisted of two doubles teams, an A team and a B team. The tournament was played in a round robin style, the A teams competing on court 1 and the B teams on court 2. Each match was first to 11 points and the total scores of each school were combined at the end of the day to determine the winner. At 10am with sun cream, hats and rackets at the ready, play got underway.
From beginning to end the tournament was played in a great spirit. Undoubtedly the glorious sunshine and the spectacular setting added to the atmosphere. Between matches the children played table tennis in the clubhouse and sampled the food prepared by the organisers and parents.
The tennis was fantastic with some very close matches, exciting finishes and long, impressive rallies. One match in particular deserves a mention between Contafleece and Carrick’s A teams; Peter and Katie Fegan versus Padraic Delahunt and Tom Harty. The match drew Oohs! and Aahs! from the on lookers due to the quality of play. Plenty of talented players exhibited their skills throughout the day, as did many with bags of potential. As the morning lengthened, a number of spectators gathered on the mini ‘Henman Hill’ behind the courts to cheer on their schools. It was perfect weather for tennis and a picnic.
Congratulations to Carrick Primary School, the deserving winners when the points were tallied. Organiser June McEvoy presented the cup to the winning team: Tom Harty, Padraic Delahunt, Niamh Cassidy and Liam Kerr. They won without losing a single match, scoring a maximum of 110 points. Congratulations as well to the runners up, St Dallans, who were then presented with medals. The team, Myles McManus, Emmett Leddy, Adam Lynch and Molly Grant scored 101 points. Well done also to the rest of the teams. Kilbroney scored 87 points, Clontafleece 86, killowen 55 and St. Bronaghs 44.
Many thanks to all involved in this wonderful tournament: The schools and their principals; the parents; the credit union; the organisers, Warrenpoint and Rostrevor tennis clubs, particularly, June McEvoy, Rosemary Finnegan, Sinead O’Reilly and Irene McManus; And, most of all, the children, who’s behaviour and sportsmanship was a credit to their schools and made for a very successful, fun, day.
